Answers
1.What is a Virtual Domain?
A Virtual Domain allows you to have your own web
address such as http://www.yourcompany.com.
The purpose of obtaining a virtual domain is to give your
site a smaller web address and attach your company name
to your website.
2.Do you offer dial-up Internet
access?
No, you'll need a local dial-up access provider
just to get connected
to the net, not for e-mail or storage. Our webservers are
dedicated
only for web hosting. Since we do not provide local
dial-up access,
our servers are not congested with local inbound dial-up
traffic that
ISPs usually get.
In fact having your website hosted on our machines rather
than at your local ISP is better since you don' t have
relocate your website or
change your e-mail if you change providers.
3.Can I upgrade from the Personal,
Professional to Professional or Corporate plans?
Yes. As your needs increase you may upgrade to
higher plans
with more storage space and additional e-mail accounts
and receive credit for unused prepaid months.
4.Can I check domain name
availability?
Please check out our search pages for InterNIC
(.com, .org, .gov) or Canadian (.CA).
These will search the respective databases for
availability of
your domain name. For other international domains, please
Email us at domains@zid.com,
and will reply with the results.
5.Do you handle Domain
registrations?
Yes. As part of sign up procedure, ZiD will
complete all the
necessary forms and contact the registration authorities
to request
new domain name or transfer an existing one to our
servers.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUBMIT ANY REGISTRATION OR
MODIFICATION TEMPLATE YOURSELF.
6.How can I transfer my existing
domain to ZiD?
When you place your order, be sure to mention
that you are
requesting a transfer. Note, it is important that you
keep the
service at your present provider while waiting for
InterNIC
to complete the transfer. We will assign your IP address
so
you can begin to transfer your site onto your new domain.
All e-mail and web pages will still be accessed from the
current site till InterNIC is processing your request.
When
InterNIC announces the completion of the transfer there
is
a 72 hour update period where visitors could go to either
site.
After this time, you can cancel your old virtual domain.
7.How long will it take to
activate my domain name?
It may take up to 72 hours to activate your
domain name once
InterNIC or CANNET approves the registration or transfer.
8.What is the InterNIC fee for
domain registration?
The InterNIC charges $100 U.S. to register a new
domain name.
All new .com, .net, and .org domain registrations are
subject
to this fee. This fee covers the first two years. Once
your domain
is registered, InterNIC will send you an invoice 2-3
weeks after.
After the first two years, InterNIC will bill you $50
U.S.annually.
For country specific domain names (eg. .uk, .au, .de,
.fr, .ro etc)

9.How do I transfer files to my
web site ?
Once you have designed your web pages locally on
your computer,
you need to send your files (HTML documents,pictures,
scripts, etc.)
to your ZiD directory with any FTP program. For Front
Page clients,
you can access your site via the FrontPage Explorer
program. You can work on-line or work on your web local
and then use the Export
feature in FrontPage to send your work to your ZiD
Virtual server.
10. What kind of FTP space is
available to me?
You will have two distinct FTP spaces, one for
standard
administration (for uploading your HTML files and
whatnot)
and another for anonymous FTP. To access the first,
simply ftp
to your site (ftp.yoursite.com) and log in with your user
id and
password, in which case you'll arrive in your virtual
home
directory (where your HTML files, cgibin, etc. reside).
Anonymous FTP (see next question) can be accessed by
logging in as user "anonymous" with an Email
address as
the password.
11. How do I get files into my FTP
space for users to retrieve? Your
anonymous FTP space can be administered by placing
files into /FTP files will then show up
for anonymous FTP
users accessing (ftp.yourdomain.com).
12. I don't know my IP address. How
do I get it?
You can do a Ping from any version Windows to
your domain,
(e.g. Ping yourdomain.com) or do a nslookup to your
domain.
Please record this data somewhere for future reference.
13. Can I have Email sent to my
primary user account forwarded elsewhere?
Yes, on the order form tell us where to send the
Email , and
it will be done. If you would like to make changes,
please
send Email to support@ZiD.com
14.What about setting up Email
"aliases", such as
"info@mydomain.com" pointing to my user id?
You must Email support@ZiD.com
with the setup information,
and we will setup and test your "aliases".
15.Do you have detailed activity
logs?
Yes. With every account a sub-directory named
Logs contains
the access log for your virtual domain. This is in a
standard
log format that can be used with many stats programs
available.
16.Do I get unlimited access to
update my web site?
You have unlimited access to your website via
FTP 24-hours
a day. We recommend that you create and maintain your web
pages on your own local computer and upload changed files
to your web site when necessary. For Front Page clients,
you
can access your site via the FrontPage Explorer program
at any time.
17.Can I use my account for
commercial purposes?
Yes, you can use your account for commercial
purposes, as long
as you adhere to the basic ZiD policies.
The web has evolved
into on of the most efficient and cost-effective means of
making
information available to the users locally and around the
world.
18.Can I resell space within my own
account?
Yes. You can resell space within your account.
However,
you will be responsible for its content and maintenance.
You won't be able to acquire multiple account passwords
for FTP access.
19.What are your payment plans?
We require a minimum 6-month contract prepaid.
If prepaid,
in advance for 12 months, you will receive one FREE month
of service ( your contract will be for 13 months at the
price of 12).
Payment can be made by cheque, money order, bank transfer
or
credit card. We accept VISA, Master Card and American
Express. Payment can be in either Canadian or US dollars.

20.Do you offer Technical support
to customers?
Yes. We encourage our Virtual Domain clients to
send e-mail to support@ZiD.com
with questions or concerns about their web
site. If we cannot offer a solution to a concern within a
reasonable
time frame,we will call you directly. Although we will
facilitate
your web development with our online resources,we can not
provide free custom programming support. We do support
any
question related to the operation of your web site on our
servers and general questions on how to use our service
effectively, but we can
not write or program your web pages. If you would like

21.How long does it take to set up
a new account?
Once payment and your signed contract is
received, your account
will be setup within 24 hours.Your account is ready, we
will
contact you via e-mail or fax with your website
instructions
and host name for ftp access. You can then begin
uploading files to
your new web site immediately. A temporary name will be
assigned (yourname.zid.com)until your domain is
registered or transferred
so that you can set up your web site and test your web
site.
22.How do I place an order?
You can may request an order form for a
Virtual Domain account
directly from our web site 24 hours a day or by calling
514-659-6507. The order forms will be sent via fax or
e-mail
and must be completed and faxed back to 514-659-9000.
